What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making your content the direct answer to a question. Answer engines are the tools that reply with one answer instead of a list of links: Google’s featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes, AI Overviews, and voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa.

When someone asks “how much does a root canal cost in Brooklyn?” or “is the hardware store on Myrtle Ave open now?”, they want one clear answer. AEO helps that answer come from you, with your name attached.

The method is simple to describe. Find the questions your customers ask. Answer each one clearly, near the top of a relevant page, in a sentence or two. Then back it up with detail, structure the page with clear headings, and keep your business facts correct everywhere voice assistants look. Correct schema markup helps answer engines read those facts reliably.

AEO is one part of our wider AI optimization services, and it sits close to GEO, which focuses on being recommended inside AI-written answers.

What’s included

What our AEO services include

Answer engine optimization best practices, applied to your pages and listings.

Question research

We collect the questions customers really ask, from Google’s People Also Ask, autocomplete, your own inbox and your sales calls.

Answer-first content

We rewrite key pages so each question gets a short, direct answer first, followed by the detail.

Clear page structure

Question-style headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables that answer engines can read and quote.

Structured data

FAQ, local business and service schema so the facts on your pages are clear to machines.

Voice search readiness

Correct details on Apple Business Connect for Siri, Google Business Profile for Google Assistant, and the listings other assistants use.

Snippet tracking

We track which questions you win featured snippets for, and which ones competitors hold.

Why it matters

Why answer engine optimization matters

More searches end with one answer. If it is yours, you win the customer before they scroll.

Top of the page

Featured snippets and AI Overviews appear above the normal results.

Voice gives one answer

A voice assistant usually reads out a single result, so second place gets nothing.

Trust by default

Being quoted as the answer makes your business look like the expert on the topic.

Better pages for everyone

Clear answers also help human readers decide faster and get in touch.

Pricing

What do AEO services cost?

AEO is often a project at the start, rewriting your key pages, followed by lighter monthly work as new questions come up. We usually include it in an SEO plan.

Price depends on these things.

  • Number of pages. Each key page needs its answers reworked.
  • Number of questions. More services mean more questions to cover.
  • Your listings. Fixing details across voice assistant sources takes time.
  • Competition. Some snippets are held by strong sites and take more work.

What you get from us

  • A list of the questions customers ask
  • Answer-first rewrites of key pages
  • FAQ and local business schema
  • Voice assistant listing fixes
  • Featured snippet tracking
  • Monthly AEO reporting

Good to know

Answer engine optimization examples

Here is what answer-first writing looks like, using a made-up dental clinic as the example. A weak page opens with “Welcome to our practice, where we take pride in our patients.” An answer-first page opens with something like “A cleaning costs $120 without insurance and takes about 45 minutes.” The second one answers the question someone actually asked.

Use question headings that match how people search, like “How long does a roof repair take?” Put the short answer in the first sentence under the heading. Then give the detail, the exceptions and a way to get in touch.

For voice search, keep your facts tidy. Siri relies on Apple Maps, so claim your listing in Apple Business Connect. Google Assistant uses your Google Business Profile. Make sure your hours, address and phone match on both.

One honest note: Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small group of well-known sites, such as government and health sites. FAQ schema still helps describe your page, but it will not usually earn extra space in results by itself.

People Also Ask boxes are a good place to start. Search for your main service and look at the questions Google shows. Each one is a question real people ask, and each one is a chance to be the answer. Add the best of them to the right pages, answered in two or three clear sentences.

  • You have no page answering common customer questions
  • Siri or Google Assistant gives wrong details for you
  • You have not claimed Apple Business Connect
  • People call to ask things your site should answer

FAQ

AEO questions, answered

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making your content the direct answer to a question in tools that give one answer, like featured snippets, AI Overviews and voice assistants.

What does AEO stand for?

In marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The same letters are also used for Authorized Economic Operator, a customs program, which is unrelated to search.

How do you do answer engine optimization?

Find the questions your customers ask, answer each one clearly at the start of a relevant section, use question-style headings, add structured data, and keep your business details accurate on the listings voice assistants use.

Is AEO the same as voice search optimization?

Voice search is one part of AEO. AEO also covers featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and AI Overviews, all of which favor clear, direct answers.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank pages in a list of results. AEO aims to be the single answer at the top. AEO builds on SEO, since answer engines mostly pull from pages that already rank.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Rewritten pages can win snippets within weeks once Google recrawls them. Bigger changes, like competing for snippets held by strong sites, can take a few months.

What are answer engine optimization best practices?

Answer the question in the first sentence, use question-style headings, keep answers short and factual, back them up with detail, add structured data and keep your business listings accurate for voice assistants.

Do voice assistants use my Google Business Profile?

Google Assistant draws on Google Search and Maps, so your Business Profile matters there. Siri relies on Apple Maps, which is why we also set up Apple Business Connect.
